What is mulching?

Mulching, also called mastication, is a treatment that enables us to take unwanted vegetation, particularly trees, sagebrush, and juniper, and break it down into chips and small woody debris. This is a popular solution for reducing fire hazards and opening forested and agricultural spaces, while still leaving desirable healthy trees. We have several different types of mulching equipment available, depending on your project needs.

Do you buy timber?

The answer is a resounding YES! Timber value can be impacted by a number of physical and environmental factors, so please contact us for a personalized site visit and quote. We reserve the right to modify quotes in response to market conditions.

Do you supply house logs?

We do! This high-demand product is generally reserved for commercial buyers. Contact us for assistance.

Do you sell firewood?

Limited firewood is available for residential buyers in Southwestern Montana, especially the Missoula, Butte, and Helena areas. We sell tree-length firewood by the log truck load--approximately 14 cords per load. Pricing may vary depending on hauling distance. Contact us for more information.

Do you have a sawmill?

We supply sawmills and other timber products manufacturers. If you're looking to purchase a finished wood product, we may be able to assist you in locating an appropriate company.

What areas do you serve?

Our main office is located just outside Deer Lodge, Mont. While we primarily serve Western Montana, we are open to working with landowners and agencies in neighboring western states, depending on the nature of the assignment. If you have a project in mind, please give us a call to discuss.

My property is a mess! What can I do?

Give us a call! KMF specializes in helping landowners cope with removing aggressive and unsightly vegetation, including clusters of stunted trees, dead and dying timber, reprod, sagebrush, and juniper. Depending on your individual property and needs, our experts may suggest such targeted treatments as mulching, thinning, weed spraying, judicial clearcutting, or selective logging.

I'd like to get some work done, but I'm afraid I won't be able to afford it. Do I have any options?

Yes! Dependng on the nature of your project, we have a variety of resources to help you get funding. KMF believes merchantable timber is worth paying for, which means some landowners stand to make money when we send in our crews. We may be even able to direct you toward grant programs and assist you in applying for them.

I have two or three trees in my backyard that need to be trimmed or removed. Can you do this?

Thanks for thinking of us! In general, a local arborist would be a more appropriate choice for this service.

Are my small trees worth anything?

Maybe! Thanks to our specialty markets, KMF is often able to work with timber that was rejected by other logging outfits. One of the things we do during an initial site visit is estimate the merchantable timber volume, if any, in the proposed area. Several factors determine which properties are worth logging, including physical accessibility, overall project feasibility, projected load count, and the quality and condtion of the wood itself.

What is a volume estimate?

This is a general calculation of the accessible and merchantable timber on your property, based on our initial site tour. It is intended for informational purposes only and may differ from the final result once timber is actually harvested.

What are stumpage payments?

Stumpage payments are one of our favorite methods for helping landowners fund timber management projects! We believe that property owners who have valuable timber to remove should be compensated for their trees. Because we work with specialty markets, we may be able to pay for wood that others have turned down. Give us a call to discuss!

Do you charge for a site visit?

We are happy to review every property we can and give each prospective client our assessment of the work needed and projected costs. There is no charge to the landowner for this service.

How quickly can your team get started?

It is typical for quality contractors to be scheduled months to years in advance. The speed with which our crews can complete your specific site varies by season, property size, location, estimated log volume, terrain, prior commitments, and other factors.
